Head Strategist for the Multi-Asset Team at BMO GAM

2026 Economic and Market Outlook: What if the U.S. Economy Remains (Again) More Resilient Than Feared?

Topics:

  • Canada and U.S. economic outlook
  • USMCA: uncertainty alone hurts as much as tariffs
  • Outlook for the Bank of Canada: high bar to hike, bruised economy would normally require one or two rate cuts
  • Housing market: hard to be bullish without more rate cuts and a slow economy, but worse is probably behind for key Canadian markets

Fred Demers is Head Strategist for the Multi-Asset Team at BMO GAM, which oversees over $85bn of AUM. Fred joined BMO GAM in 2018 as portfolio manager and investment strategist. Prior to joining BMO GAM, Fred held earlier roles as Chief Macro Strategist for Canada at TD Securities, at Credit Suisse Asset Management in New York where he was a global macro Portfolio Manager. Fred began his career as an economist at the Bank of Canada and also worked as a macro PM at Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec. Fred holds a B.A. in Economics from Concordia University and M.A. in Economics from the University of Ottawa.
